We all know the details about losing weight. If our intelligence had anything to do with it....we would be thin. I feel so disappointed in myself when I have tried to lose weight and failed. Linda Spangle has shown me that is not what I am eating that is the problem. It is my whole attidude towards food in general. Her motivational hints have helped me change my life style. I am not rapidly losing weight, but I feel healthier and in control of my eating. I am losing about a pound a week without officially being on a "diet". I did not feel it was necessary to read the book from the beginning to the end. I have left it by my bedside and read a few pages at night and sometimes I reread the same little section in the morning. Each motivational tidbit is only about two pages long. This book has helped me drop my membership in the "clean plate club". It has also helped me to "savor" a bite or two of the foods I crave instead of gobbling them down. Reading this book has definitely helped elevate my self-esteem. I had originally borrowed this book from the local library. After reading it, I went online and ordered copies for myself and my sister.

Why can't I Lose Weight? *****

There are SO many books on this subject to choose from. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. It comes from a very loving place and offers some very real advice about why you are overweight and some real suggestions about what you can do about it. It goes deep at times, but once you realize that the outside is just a symptom, you can start focusing on what really matters and make changes that will last. The author suggests that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full, from -2 to 2 on a scale from -10 to 10 (so about every 2 or 3 hours). She encourages you to really pay attention to your body because it will let you know what it wants and needs. She asks you to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes, and not eating or doing anything else to avoid your feelings. She wants her clients and readers to work with their bodies and no longer against them. It sounds simple, and it is, it's just that the whole subject has gotten so complicated we feel that there needs to be an elaborate answer. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
~"We have been trained not to waste food in the garbage, but to waste it on our bodies. Either way it is wasted. In one way, we just carry the waste with us."
~"Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy."
****~If you believe that you will always be overweight, it will be very difficult to lose weight permanently. Beliefs and reality like to be reflective of each other. When reality starts to contradict a belief, a tension is created in our life and this tension makes us uncomfortable...At this point, we have two choices to reduce the tension: change the belief system or change the reality...to sabotage our reality and gain our weight back in order to be back in line with what we believe...It's not until we get hold of the belief and change it that we find any permanent weight-loss results."****
This would explain why most "diets" fail, because they are just treating the symptom and not the underlying problem.
This book is amazing and it was a total surprise, since I stumbled on it "accidentally." It works from the inside out, which is the best way to go about a permanent change. There are a lot of great exercises and suggestions. It was definitely worth my time and money, and I've already made a lot of the changes suggested in this book, and I feel more in control of my life and healthier already. A paradigm shift and a Fabulous book! =)

Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss ****

I'll be honest with you, when it comes to nutrition, I am illiterate at best and just plain lazy at worst. I have never had to pay much attention to my weight (so I thought). I pretty much ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. When I weighed 140 pounds and the military told me my maximum weight was 189 pounds, I remember telling soeone that if I ever reached my maximum, there would have to be something wrong with me. Well guess what? Something must be wrong with me.

In 2003, I topped the scale at 202 pounds (my ideal weight is 176). I knew I had to do something. I read Dr. Shapiro's book, and on September 25, 2003, I began his program. By November 20, 2003, I weighted a sleek 182 pounds. That is 20 pounds in less than two months. The funny thing is that I was never hungry. In fact, I ate more on Dr Shapiro's plan than I was eating before. My exercise consisted of a daily morning walk, and I cut processed sugar and sodas out of my diet. That was it. With his help, I was simply able to make more healthy choices.

Well, I got lazy (yep, I figured out what my problem was), and I put all of those pounds back on--they actually came back slower than they came off. Four years later, I am back over 200 pounds. I plan to implement his plan once again. This time, I plan to stick with it for life.

The only criticism I have is the same one that some others have mentioned. Dr. Shapiro does advocate a vegetarian diet, so there is no information in there about meats. But, in reading his book, you get the principle, which is most important, Then, it is just a matter of reading labels and making healthy choices.

Unless you have a medical reason for your weight, I truly believe that anyone who is willing to commit to Dr. Shapiro's plan will see the pounds literally melt away. It won't happen overnight, but you will begin to see results in as little as 1-2 weeks.

The Bible Cure for Weight Loss and Muscle Gain ****

Though I've seen Dr. Colbert on Pastor Hagee and Joyce Meyer shows. I really wasn't completly convinced he knew what he was talking about. I was completely prepared to dismiss him as "quackery" and the fringe element of "the Christian Right" until I actually bought "What Would Jesus Eat", and found out that everything he said was true. Eating more vegetables does make you feel full longer

The Bible Cure for Weight Loss and Muscle Gain, is even better. Being an endomorph with a slow metabolysm my weight plateud for two years straight. It was when I read his book and bought the vitamins that he suggested the weight started comming off again.

Taking a supplement of vitamins and minerals he suggested has gon a long way to nurrishing my body, and ceasing the intense cravings I was experiencing for carbohydrates.

Colbert also points out how the body works and why sugars and starchs actually prevent weight loss. The example he gives of a woman who ate healthy but still couldn't loose weight because she was sucking on breath mints all day was mind blowing. Once she stopped the weight began to come off. It's amazing how something seeming so small can interfere with your wieght loss goals.

You don't have to be a Christian or particularly relgious to get what Dr. Colbert suggests. His medical advice is spot on. There are a ton of diet books out there. But I find that this one is the most simple and effective. You owe yourself or someone you know who is struggling with the battle of "The bulge" to get this book. It will help you or even save your life.

Weight Loss Confidential: How Teens Lose Weight and Keep It Off - and What They Wish Parents Knew *****

What a great book. I think it's great for anyone, but especially for parents and teens and parents of teens.
Ann Fletcher has already written a series of books before on adults who had lost weight and kept it off, and thinking how motivating it is to read about other peoples success, she wrote this in hopes of helping teens and their families to help fight the obesity crisis and help teens who struggle daily with their weight. She is a registered dietitian and she is very smart and has written this really well. Her own son has had his share of weight problems and that was some of the driving force for her to begin this book.
She interviews over 100 teens who have lost weight in healthy ways, who have shown that sensible stratagies work and so hopefully this will stop others losing weight in a dangerous fashion. She interviews some of the parents too so it's good to get perspective from all sides. The top stratagy that helped these teens was exercise; this helped them to be able to still join their friends when they go out and feel that they could still eat what their friends did, but not feel so guilty. The other top stratagies she heard about while interviewing them was cutting back on their sodas and some unhealthful snacks.
Overall, this book is full of inspiring kids who have begun to turn their life and health around. While they may not have come up with any new secrets in the battle of weight loss, they will hopefully show other kids that it can be done and that it can be done in a healthy manner and I really think this book should be read by everyone. It's fantastic and I highly recommend it.

Relax Your Way to Thin! Hypnosis Weight Loss Motivation (Audio CD) ****

 I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.

Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.
